“With great sadness, we are announcing a reduction in force as we reorganize Bungie. As the leaders of Bungie, past and present, we recognize Destiny 2 fell short of expectations these past several years. Following our final content update to Destiny 2, and with our future projects still in early incubation, we unfortunately could not continue operating at our previous size.
We know this decision has a profound impact on the people affected, their families, friends, and teammates. While these changes are necessary to best position the studio now and for the future, that does not lessen the difficulty of this moment or the impact it has on those affected.
Later, we will share more about that future with you all but today is not that day.
Today, we wish to extend our gratitude and compassion to every member of the Bungie team who has been impacted and to those who remain.
We hope you will do the same.
- Bungie”
Obviously knew this was coming, but I still hate it.

Forgive my pessimism.
Even if they turn Marathon into a game with more mainstream appeal, the marketing budget that will be required to get people interested in it again is going to be astronomical.
I want it to succeed. It's just hard to see a path forward from where I'm sitting. Regardless, my condolences go out to the many, many people impacted by today's layoffs.

Does this include whoever greenlit the idea to pay 3.6 billion dollars for Bungie?

He's getting this from Herman Hulst, who published his own internal email to Sony Interactive's website.
For anyone out there who still doubts the erosion of Bungie's independence, the wording of this memo strongly implies that SIE took the decision to enact layoffs themselves.

According to Jason Schreier, Truman is out following the layoffs, and word is that Poria Torkan (formerly VP of Operations) is the new lead of what remains.

‘Remains’ is an accurate word to describe Bungie at this point.

I don’t want to be too dramatic here, but… can I say that this feels like the end of Bungie as we know it?

I've always wanted Bungie to succeed and I've been hesitant to express negativity about the direction they've been going these past few years, but with the loss of this much institutional knowledge, it's just not going to be the same place anymore. It can't be.
And with Jones gone, the vision for the company's future will change to whatever SIE decides it ought to be. (Unlike most of the internet, apparently, I refuse to believe that Jones has been drawing a paycheck for doing nothing at all this whole time. He had a real job. Primarily, that job was coming up with innovative ideas for future games and then working with incubation teams to develop proof-of-concepts.)
Maybe Bungie finds a way forward with Marathon and continues to make great games, but even if that happens, it's not really *Bungie* anymore, and I think I'm okay with saying that now.
It's the end of Bungie as we know it... and I feel fine.

Lars Bakken, Scott Taylor, and Tyson Green are all gone. It appears that Alison Luhrs survived the purge. Luke Timmons, ME Chung, and Shi Kai Wang are at teamLFG, so I guess they're insulated from all of this. Chris Butcher and Achronos seem to have made it as well.

From a combination of sources. Lars Bakken, Scott Taylor, and Alison Luhrs have updated their LinkedIn profiles. Tyson Green and Jason Jones's job titles are listed on the WARN notice Bungie was required to file with the State of Washington because they're implementing a mass layoff.
Butcher and Achronos are more guesswork on my part, but given that Butcher is the enigneering director for the Tiger Engine and Achronos is the lead server architect at Bungie, they can't really afford to lose either of those guys. There is no indication that either of them were dismissed, and there are remarkably few technical roles on the WARN notice in any case.
Lars was the Senior Design Lead on Marathon. He was a core team member.

Yeah...
I don't want to ramble too much, but the economy is in the toilet right now and the massive capital spend on AI is the only thing holding us back from a full-blown recession. To me, that's an obvious bubble that is going to burst any day now*, and when that happens, things are going to get really bad really quickly, but for now it's propping everything else up. I think this one will be worse than 2008, but we'll see.
On top of this pretty terrible general environment, the video game industry in particular is running into its own unsustainabubble moment as development costs are becoming impossible to justify. There's a lot of talk about a market correction, but frankly, I think the industry is due for a crash, not as bad as the one in the '80s (because the demand for gaming is undeniable), but certainly not good for anyone currently working in that field.
For reference, my occupation is wealth management, which involves a degree of financial analysis and trying to predict the near-future of what the economy is about to do.
(* AI itself is a useful technology that is not going anywhere, whether we like it or not, but the current market speculation around AI is completely divorced from reality.)
(* AI itself is a useful technology that is not going anywhere, whether we like it or not, but the current market speculation around AI is completely divorced from reality.)
That just seems true of nearly everything. It all seems so divorced from reality. Look at the Space X IPO, or jesus, Tesla. Anyone who thinks Tesla should genuinely be valued as they are needs their head examined. That seems true of a lot of tech companies, too. It’s like it’s all propped up by collective delusion.

It was the end of Bungie as we knew it when Seropian left.
And when they stopped developing for Macintosh.
And when they sold all the assets to Take2.
And when they sold off Halo.
And when they moved from Chicago to Washington.
And when Marty left.
And when they stopped publishing letters to the Webmaster.
And probably a bunch of other times I'm forgetting.
It's a ship of Thesius. Draw the line wherever you want to, but I can't find one, personally. Mere months ago they shipped a new game that I like a lot and that feels like Bungie to me. I still have some hope for the institutional knowledge.

I've found the (myriad) post-mortems floating around X/Reddit/here interesting and, as someone who's been mostly checked out since D1, educational.
I have thoughts and speculations but first I'd like to know: how do (and did) people receive Destiny 1? I remember even then that people had the same sort of "this sucks but I'm playing anyway" impulsion that I'd say has characterized the Destiny 2 fan communities. And yet D1 must have been commercially successful in a way D2 wasn't.
If the fault for the layoffs the last few years is with "management", what changed? And for the people who believe the "soul" of Bungie escaped long ago and what remains is a corporate husk, was that soul present in D1?

Speaking just for myself, I thoroughly enjoyed D1, but I hated that it didn't have a story. And neither did D2 (at least up to the point where I quit playing it). As far as my memory goes, I could have sworn Destiny was supposed to have a story, but they forced out Joseph Staten or something along those lines and scrapped a ton of what the game was supposed to do.
At the same time, even though it wasn't perfect, multiplayer was a lot of fun. I never really tired of Crucible, and I enjoyed doing things with whoever I was playing with. The raids were the best part of the game, especially having done all of them blind to start with others who also went in blind. Oh, and Trials of Osiris was an awesome time. I'm pretty sure D1 was a huge success and was printing money for a while there.
D2 felt soulless and like it was just going through the motions. A lot of the clever Crucible map design and fun seemed to be missing from the sterile maps in D2. The lack of story to the game also didn't help. I ducked out when it became apparent that they weren't going to really improve on the in-game economy, grinding, and total disrespect for players' time. HOWEVER, I was under the impression that D2 also printed money for years and years before eventually running into issues later on. I have no sources for this that I can readily point to for what I just said about D1 and D2, just strictly going off of what I'm remembering from back then.
If the fault for the layoffs the last few years is with "management", what changed? And for the people who believe the "soul" of Bungie escaped long ago and what remains is a corporate husk, was that soul present in D1?
I don't know if changed is the right word, but Pete Parsons was a disaster. Too much for me to want to go into here. But I believe the soul was present in D1, particularly with how Joseph Staten's vision (among many others who had been around for the decade+ prior) helped to shape and craft a lot of it (though a lot of that seemingly being thrown out), and Luke Smith at least managing the raids and that whole process. And story or no story, the lore and Grimoire were absolutely top notch imo.
Which leads me to Marathon (which I'll post about separately). In classic Bungie fashion, the game was in development and apparently had to get scrapped or almost entirely reworked into something else. And although it may have bombed with the public at large and does have its problems, I think the game is great and filled with a lot of soul and character. But after all of these layoffs, including to some of the Marathon team, who knows what even that future holds.

D1 was received pretty poorly. There were groups angry because they wanted Bungie to make a new version of the franchise they were playing before and mad at the new thing for dooming the old thing. It was describes as being far too complex to have any mass appeal. There were media stories about the whole game needing to be scrapped last minute and re-built compromised and not having enough time to make a "full game". There was controversy about not keeping promises about what the game would be from earlier demos. There were pundits talking about how a huge tech company had given Bungie so much money that it would be the rope that hanged them.
You may have noticed I'm drawing some parallels. Nothing is exactly the same, and the difference in both the power of online malcontents and the absolute scale of the companies and finances involved obviously make it different.
As for comparing D1 to D2, I'm not even sure it's useful to try. The time scales are so different and Activision's role, and the number of players and even the fundamental vision of what the destiny franchise is and what it would mean for it to be successful all changes so very much over that decade plus. There are lots of stories about bad management at Bungie, and I'm not an expert (partly because most times I try to learn I end up reading a screed about "stolen" content and a rich guy buying sports cars), so I'll leave that part unanswered here.

D1 was the abusive spouse you stayed with because the sex was absolutely incredible.
D1 was the abusive spouse you stayed with because the sex was absolutely incredible.
i would agree.
It had a lot of "I can fix her" vibes.
I remember my first playthrough having fun but not really excited. You get this vibe that no one has traveled off Earth in forever (I don't know if that's true, but that's what it felt like). Then I got to the final encounter on the Last Array, I love the music is just jamming and and I'm watching the dish get into position and thinking "alright, this is where the story finally gets going"....and....I don't have time to explain why I don't have time to explain.
Also, space travel is actually really commonplace, and why did I need to got to all that trouble to set up that dish? and if that one dish is so important, why isn't it protected after that.
Still fun as hell to play. I liked just messing around in the open world and helping randos with public events, or opening the vault of glass for them, etc. But the constant grind and sunsetting weapons and maps was terrible. Why can't i play the Red War? I paid for that, and now its gone. I still play Super Mario World on my SNES, but i can't play the base game of D2. Why piss my money away like that?
I dropped out in 2019 and haven't looked back. I am tempted to buy everything now since its cheap just to finish the story, but I don't know if i have time to play that much and grind away.

I'm not sure I trust that you can finish the story the same way it was originally presented, given their track record.
