Are you sure? There's VoG and the classic playlists.

This is assuming he has no xbl subscription (not mentioned either way).

thanks for the replies! (reply)

As long as the basic game works we are fine. He is 12 years old and this is his first time getting Xbox Live (he's only ever played single player games on 360).

The basic disc is like $10 and I'm also getting him Star Wars and a Headset.
My sister can buy him the DLC if he really likes it.

Thanks for the answers everybody!

Destiny gift help... Does vanilla Destiny still work? (reply)

Hey everybody :)

Here for my annual DBO post ...

Does Vanilla Destiny work? My nephew is getting an Xbone for Christmas and I don't wanna spend a lot of money on his gift... I was looking at getting him a cheap copy of Destiny and Star Wars Battlefront.

Do you need the DLC to play Destiny?

It's Destiny: The Collection or bust, man. And even then, at this point I'd say to just skip Destiny altogether (I assume that your nephew is a squeaker, so I can't imagine him having the extensive friend list required for a kid to do things in Destiny, and Funk's nephew has pretty much claimed all of the Xbone DBOers).

Just get the kid Minecraft or Halo 5 ($28 on Amazon), since both have a lot of content out-the-box.

Ultimately you have to figure what he is trying to get out of it. If you really think he would love the campaign and doesn't really care about the story (at certain ages it really doesn't matter) then I would say get him the collection and let him run through the story.

I personally love campaigns, and even at a $60 for the entire collection (I have no idea what it costs right now) that is well worth it. We like to gripe and complain about a lot of things here in regards to Destiny, but It still has a pretty decent Campaign and the game mechanics are still solid for it's price.

So if you have a range of games you are thinking about, consider all of them.

He can play the vanilla campaign and do basic patrols only.

No mp, no raids.

He'll be capped super low, and will be artificially restricted from essentially everything.

He'll be reminded of that all the time too as he tries to do anything.

Honestly, I say skip it. That disc is pretty much worthless now.
