That is 100% exactly what my XBone (which has background downloads disabled) does. I'm not sure what Morpheus was talking about, TBH.

As for whether the big part of the update successfully downloads in the background when that's enabled.... I don't know. I turned that feature off within the first week of having the console.

Yeah, that's how the Xbone works. If you launch Destiny right around the time an update has come out the Xbone software says something like "Hey, Destiny needs an update" and clicking ok takes you to the My games & apps section where it then downloads the gigabytes of the update. Then, when you relaunch Destiny that last little bit is downloaded if needed.

Weird. On PS4 the major update goes through the PS4 (but still not in the background), and then when destiny is done launching, it downloads another ~400kb patch through the game that takes literally moments. It's the several hours spent at the PS4 dashboard downloading the 2+ GB patch beforehand that suck balls (and of that time, 90% of it is "preparing to download" whereby it seems that Destiny is checking every goddamn bit of code to find out what version you presently have installed or something).

I'd love for it to update in the background like everything else.

The best advice is that when an update for Destiny goes live, you should go to the Playstation website, and set the PS4 to start downloading anything (free demo, theme, avatar picture, whatever). It should trigger it to start downloading Destiny updates.

Good to know for next time. Sadly it wouldn't have helped at the 111kbps I was getting (over wired ethernet). The only way I was able to finally get it working at a decent rate was to restart the ps4.

Another piece of advice whenever a download gets slow, go to the Settings -> Network Settings -> Test internet connection.

Do that, and it'll refresh the download speed.

You better believe I did that. That's how I knew what speed my ps4 was getting. I sometimes find myself needing to do that when I wake my console and am at the destiny main screen in order to get destiny to recognize it's connected to the internet.

The Xbox CAN, but Destiny doesn't (reply)

That's weird. You're talking about the main update that would show up in "My Games % Apps," right? Not the second update that happens while Destiny is logging in?

I don't use the auto-update/always-sort-of-on mode myself (I tried it briefly, and didn't like how much heat my "inactive" console was generating), so I have no experience. But it's weird that it would treat any game differently.
