2. This is an incredibly stupid and inefficient way to control an NLE, let alone color grading.

The number of people who are convinced I want to type out a whole fucking conversation just to get something done. I swear. This backlash can't come soon enough.

Shame about my 401K, though.

I don't know enough about film editing or film editing software to know whether that would be a time saver or not (apparently not). The software I use for designing/modeling buildings and structures is so incredibly clunky that being able to ask it to do things in that style would be vastly more efficient. Heck, even just Claude for Excel is a vast improvement over trying to google how to chain formulas to do some weird data manipulation.

You really don't think that every single coding job is now done using LLMs?

That explains why Adobe Premiere 2015 Ran faster in a 2010 Intel Mac than 2026 does on Apple Silicon. Given the downward trend in software quality and increase in bloat, I’m starting to believe this might be correct.

Things like exports are faster of course, but the day to day tasks and interface manipulation are getting worse and worse.

Did painters go away after the invention of photography?

Yes? Yes. Almost entirely, yes. The idea of a portrait got democratized out the wazoo, but it effectively killed the industry. It's now seen as a hobby, not a serious way to memorialize people and things, which was mostly its purpose before Photography. They had to invent shit like surrealism, dadaism, abstract, etc. just to find blue ocean in the aftermath.

I read a book chapter at one point in my life with the thesis that new forms of media almost never destroy the old- rather they change the meaning of it. Cinemas didn't get rid of performance theater productions, but they did make them a hobby for the elite. Email didn't kill the handwritten letter. Instead it made the effort of writing a letter by hand take on new meaning as a sign of effort or affection. In the case above, you're correct that photography changed the entire meaning of what it meant to get a painting done. It also meant that painters lost their jobs as the market demands shifted around those new meanings.

I've found the observation to be largely true. I suppose we never get telegrams anymore...

Debatable (reply)

Both your link and mine mention that it's a subject of debate whether OXO meets the definition of a video game. There is no doubt that Tennis for Two was a video game.

According to Wikipedia's Early history of video games page, there were a number of games introduced in the early 50s that predated Tennis for Two. It specifically lists Tennis for Two as "[p]ossibly the first video game created simply for entertainment" - but that introduces a bar that has not been discussed before now. There's nothing in this conversation that required the 'simply for entertainment' feature to qualify. Building a game to show it's possible doesn't make that game any less of a game than building a game 'simply for entertainment'.

I read that. My interpretation was that Tennis for Two was the first one that was actually intended to be playable by anyone, and was presented to the public as such, as opposed to being a tech demo in a lab. More importantly, it was the first one to feature moving or real-time updating of graphics. You are right. No one said anything about the criteria being that the game was "simply for entertainment." I said only that both of the web pages that Cody and I linked to made mention of the fact that the definition of what constituted the first video game was a subject of debate, and that is true.
