Elder Scrolls Online (reply)

Also, not much of an MMO guy. I like the idea of an MMO, but the execution so far leaves a lot to be desired.

This, for me as well. I'm never sure of the commitment I can make to a game long-term; online MP and closed-campaign RPGs (i.e. Skyrim, DragonAge) work well for me because I can drop in and out as my free time waxes and wanes.

I love Elder Scrolls, but I've been turned off by ESO since it's announcement and I've never felt quite right about it. Am I just being close-minded? My impression of MMOs has always been if you can't pour time into it, you fall behind very quickly.

I have these worries about Destiny too, but I want to believe that Bungie is going to deliver the "friends on the couch" MP experience they always hoped online MP would be. I trust they will deliver a grand adventure and they understand what went right and wrong with the "first generation" of console online play....

I've gone from a Destiny seller to buyer in the last few months. I guess I just miss playing Bungie games. With ES though, I can wait for Bethesda to publish their next "closed" RPGs (ESO 6?, Fallout 4?) so I'm less likely to give ESO a shot.

Elder Scrolls Online (reply)

Agreed. My only real experience with TES is Skyrim, but yeah, I LIKE venturing out alone and doing what I want when I want to do it. Having to constantly go on quests or being forced to kill swarms of minor enemies just feels... wrong. There's so many fun micorstories I could relate about my adventures in Skyrim and pratically none of them have anything to do with obtaining gold, or delivering an item somewhere or any MMO style thing...

Skyrim with its openness is either #1 or #2 for my top game of the 360. It does leave me wondering a bit where Destiny will place and how it might play in comparison...

Elder Scrolls Online (reply)

I'm reluctant to say "yes". I have an Xbox One and love the Elder Scrolls. At the very least, I'm interested in playing the game for a month or two, but paying $15/month for any longer than that is ridonkulous.

Also, not much of an MMO guy. I like the idea of an MMO, but the execution so far leaves a lot to be desired.

I didn't realize that the XBO/PS4 versions of ESO would carry the $15/mo charge as well, but re-reading the copy, I see that you're right! I was pretty interested in ESO for Mac, but honestly, that ongoing price is a dealbreaker for me. I rarely have time to complete end-game content, so I'll be burning $15 every month just to work through content that many people will experience much sooner than I will. And that's on top of a full $60 to just get a foot in the door…

We've beaten this horse to death, so I'll keep it simple, but now seems like a good time to say that I think the lack of subscription fees is one of the best decisions Bungie and Activision have made about Destiny.

Is anyone thinking about picking this up for Xbox One? The monthly subscription is unfortunate but it might help cover the gap between June and September.
